Welcome to the 2018 Leaside Leafs Rookieball (9U) AAA Team
This past season we competed in the TBA as a Minor Rookieball (8U) team and finished with a combined regular season and tournament record of 20-10-3. We finished third in the TBA AAA standings and won a bronze at the TBA end-of-season AAA playoff tournament. We had an exciting run, reaching at least the semi-finals in every tournament we played this summer and beating several of the top teams in the province.
Most importantly we had a lot of fun. We had a great player and parent dynamic and the kids learned a lot about baseball, comradery and friendship.
Our Philosophy on Tryouts
In alignment with the Leaside Leafs Rep and Select program philosophy, our team has multiple roster spots open for competition going into tryouts. Any player may have the opportunity to make our team based on the following attributes demonstrated in tryouts:
We encourage all players from Leaside House Leagues, Leaside Baseball Camp or other programs or teams around Toronto or Ontario to participate in tryouts.
Our Plans for the 2018 Season
Acknowledging that after the 2018 our players will start pitching and catching, we view that the upcoming Rookieball season is extremely important. We see the Rookieball season as being crucial for the intensive training of fielding and hitting technique as the following season will be focussed on pitching, catching and hitting variable speed pitching.
As part of this philosophy, each player on the 2018 Leaside Leafs Rookieball AAA team will play at least a full game of regular season innings at each position on the field. We see this as being important for two reasons: (1) it allows players to get a practical understanding of the roles and responsibilities of each player on the baseball field and (2) it allows players to be better informed as they start to choose their positional specialization in coming years.
Additionally, by mid-season we will be introducing pitching to our practices. Players will start to learn the basics of safely pitching and catching, all well as hitting pitched balls.
